Studies show teachers are being pushed to the brink of burnout and leaving the profession, placing teachers’ health and wellness in jeopardy.
(Daniels & Strauss, 2009; Maslach & Leiter, 2008; Stephenson, 2012; Vladut & Kallay, 2010; Wilkerson, 2009).
At The Namaste Project, we believe that a variety of contemplative practices foster an environment of care and support for educators.
Contemplative practices such as mindfulness have continued to gain popularity in educational settings as research has shown that they offer comprehensive tools to decrease stress, increasing wellbeing and teacher self-efficacy (Kemeny et al, 2012; Roeser et al, 2013).
Educator stress, anxiety, depression and other mental and physical health issues has always been reported as higher compared to adults not in the field. Decrease in wellbeing has continued to rise during Covid era teaching and has continued post-pandemic.
Teacher burnout, decreased self-efficacy, and increased stress was not solely isolated to the pandemic, as high rates of psychological distress occurred prior to 2020.
The pandemic highlighted an overwhelming importance of nurturing our educators and providing them with adequate support to cope with the many stresses they face.
Our work with schools and districts around the country has focused on learning the best way to support teachers with research driven interventions with a sole focus on helping educators be well. Our extensive research showed that when given the tools to participate in mindfulness teachers reported lowered stress, higher satisfaction with work and gratitude to the districts and schools for supporting them.
“I have enjoyed most learning skills that I can use to self manage anxiety and trauma”~ Mindful Educator Teacher Participant
“The program is thoughtfully designed and encourages self awareness of one’s thoughts and feelings as we traverse the stressfulness of COVID while teaching students.~ Mindful Educator Teacher Participant
“My biggest takeaway is the belief that the district is actually concerned about teacher welfare; physical and mental”~ Mindful Educator Teacher
But we know not every teacher who needs this program has access to it at their district, so we put together a shorter version of the program that teachers can sign up for individually and are offering the program at two times this summer to allow teachers in different parts of the country to attend during summer break.
What if neither of the times work for me?
We know that teachers work during the summer, and travel, and have families and lives. The cohorts are designed to allow you to take the classes and attend weekly live sessions however you will have access to the course, the facebook community and the regular follow up live sessions forever.
What is The Mindful Educator?
The Mindful Educator for Teachers is a five-week program that encourages intentional mindfulness through a multifaceted accessible approach anchored in meditation, yoga, and education. This course is created for k-12 school staff, administration, and faculty who desire to become more mindful in and out of the classroom.
The Mindful Educator is a unique program in that it delves more deeply into holistic psychoeducational programming, which addresses a variety of topics aimed to better understand trauma, how the brain works, and why it influences our responses.
Educational components presented address both the theory and practice of mindfulness and yoga.
